Suspect in Colorado prison chief's slaying dies

DECATUR, Texas (AP) ? A former Colorado inmate and white supremacist at the center of a two-state mystery is dead after a high-speed chase and shootout with Texas deputies. Now investigators are trying to piece together whether he killed the chief of Colorado prisons and a pizza delivery man, and where he was headed when Texas police tried to pull him over.

His identity still must be officially confirmed by fingerprint analysis, but investigators believe he is Evan Spencer Ebel, 28, a Colorado parolee with a long record of convictions since 2003 for various crimes including assaulting a prison guard in 2008. Denver police Friday said they were "confident" he was involved in the death of Nathan Leon, 27, the pizza man whose body was found Sunday.

Authorities also are trying to determine whether the black Cadillac Ebel drove was the same seen outside the home of Tom Clements, the prison official, who was shot and killed when he answered the door Tuesday evening. Texas authorities spotted the car Thursday and gave chase after Ebel shot and wounded a deputy. They fatally shot him after he crashed into a semi and opened fire on his pursuers.

The Denver Post first reported Ebel's name, and that he was in a white supremacist prison gang called the 211s. A federal law enforcement official confirmed his identity and gang affiliation to The Associated Press. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Ebel is not on the radar of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist groups, but the center rates the gang as one of the most vicious white supremacist groups operating in the nation's prisons, comparable to the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas. Founded in 1995 to protect white prisoners from attacks, it operates only in Colorado and has anywhere from between a couple hundred to 1,000 members, senior fellow Mark Potok said Friday.

The gang has grown into a sophisticated criminal enterprise where members are assigned military titles like "general" and extort money from fellow prisoners, regardless of race. Released members are expected to make money to support those still in prison, Potok said. He said members have to attack someone to get in and can only get out by dying.

"It's blood in and blood out," he said.

In 2005, 32 members were indicted for racketeering and the gang's founder, Benjamin Davis, was sentenced to over 100 years in prison.

Emergency personnel carry the driver of a black Cadillac with Colorado plates who was involved in a high speed chase and shootout with police in Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 21, 2013. The driver led police on a gunfire-filled chase through rural Montague County, crashed his car into a truck in Decatur, opened fire on authorities and was shot, officials said. The killing of Clements, 58, shocked his quiet neighborhood in Monument, a town of rolling hills north of Colorado Springs, for its brutality: He answered the door of his home Tuesday evening and was gunned down. Authorities wouldn't say if they thought the attack was related to his job, and all Clements' recent public activities and cases were scrutinized.

The Texas car chase started when a sheriff's deputy in Montague County, James Boyd, tried to pull over the Cadillac around 11 a.m. Thursday, authorities there said. They wouldn't say exactly why he was stopped, but called it routine.

The driver opened fire on Boyd, wounding him, Wise County Sheriff David Walker said at an afternoon news conference in Decatur. He then fled south before crashing into a semi as he tried to elude his pursuers.

After the crash, he got out of the vehicle, shooting at deputies and troopers who had joined the chase. He shot at Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins four times as the chief tried to set up a roadblock.

"He wasn't planning on being taken alive," Hoskins said.

Boyd, the deputy who was shot, was wearing a bulletproof vest and was at a Fort Worth hospital, authorities said. Officials had said he wasn't seriously injured but later said his condition was unknown.

Legal records show Ebel was convicted of several crimes in Colorado dating back to 2003, including assaulting a prison guard in 2008. He apparently was paroled, but Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman Alison Morgan said she could not release information on prisoners because of the ongoing investigation into Clements' death.

Scott Robinson, a criminal defense attorney and media legal analyst, represented Ebel in 2003 and 2004. He said Ebel had been sentenced to a halfway house for a robbery charge in 2003 before he was accused in two additional robbery cases the following year that garnered prison sentences of three and eight years.

"I thought he was a young man who was redeemable, otherwise I wouldn't have taken the case," Robinson said, saying he didn't recall the details of the case.

Robinson said he knew Ebel before he got in trouble. He said Ebel was raised by a single father and had a younger sister who died in a car accident years ago.

Vicky Bankey said Ebel was in his teens when she lived across from him in suburban Denver until his father moved a couple of years ago. She remembers seeing Ebel once jump off the roof of his house. "He was a handful. I'd see him do some pretty crazy things," she said.

"He had a hair-trigger temper as a kid. But his dad was so nice," Bankey said.

Ebel's father didn't return an after-hours phone message left at his business.

Clements came to Colorado in 2011 after working three decades in the Missouri prison system. Missouri Department of Corrections spokeswoman Mandi Steele said Thursday the department was ready to help in the probe if asked.

The last public official killed in Colorado in the past 10 years was Sean May, a prosecutor in suburban Denver. An assailant killed May as he arrived home from work. Investigators examined May's court cases, but the case remains unsolved.

Ex-Calif. city officials convicted in corruption trial

By Alex Dobuzinskis and Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Five former elected officials from the scandal-plagued California city of Bell were convicted on Wednesday of misusing municipal funds by collecting exorbitant salaries in a case that drew national attention as a symbol of public corruption.

The trial stemmed from an explosive scandal in Bell, a small, mostly blue-collar municipality near Los Angeles, following revelations in 2010 that its city manager, Robert Rizzo, was paid a salary of $787,000 - or nearly twice that of President Barack Obama.

Rizzo faces a separate trial with his onetime assistant, Angela Spaccia, on public corruption-related charges.

The Bell scandal fueled a statewide debate over public pay and led to upheaval in the city of over 35,000 residents, who in 2011 voted to replace all their council members.

Capping two weeks of deliberations, a Los Angeles County jury on Wednesday found ex-Mayor Oscar Hernandez and former City Council members Teresa Jacobo and George Mirabal each guilty on five felony counts of misappropriation of public funds and acquitted them of five other counts.

Former Councilman George Cole was convicted of two counts and acquitted of two others, while ex-Councilman Victor Bellow was found guilty of four counts and acquitted of four others.

A sixth defendant, former Councilman Luis Artiga, was acquitted of all 12 counts against him. He wept as Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy told him he was free to go.

After acquitting Artiga, the jury of seven women and five men said they had deadlocked, 9-3, on remaining counts against his five co-defendants. They went home for the day and were expected to return on Thursday morning to resume deliberations.

One juror sent the court a note after the guilty verdicts were reached in which he said he had questions about information he felt had not been "presented properly," and had left him with doubts.

Cole's attorney, Ronald Kaye, seized on the note to ask the judge to question the juror about his verdict, on the grounds that he may have had a doubt that would undermine the panel's unanimous decision on the guilty verdicts.

Judge Kennedy said she was "not going to re-open verdicts that have been reached."

All six former officials on trial had been accused of giving themselves extravagant pay for sitting on various municipal boards - the Community Housing Authority, Surplus Property Authority, Public Financing Authority and Solid Waste and Recycling Authority - that rarely met to conduct business.

Bellow's attorney, Leo Moriarty, said outside court it was unclear how much time behind bars the convicted defendants could face, but he added that they could be sentenced to probation under the counts on which they have been found guilty.

Defense lawyers argued that their clients were wrongly accused, had worked hard for the city and earned their salaries.

The eight former city officials arrested in September 2010 in the investigation were collectively accused of bilking taxpayers out of roughly $5.5 million through excessive salaries, benefits and illicit loans of public money. Then-Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley called it a case of "corruption on steroids."

The Bell scandal came to light when the Los Angeles Times in a series of articles revealed the city's officials had secretly enriched themselves, and the paper won the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 for its coverage of the story.

Goblin-proof chicken book wins odd-title prize

(AP) ? A supernaturally tinged barnyard manual has won Britain's quirkiest literary award, the Diagram Prize for year's oddest book title.

"Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop" by Reginald Bakeley was awarded the prize Friday by trade magazine The Bookseller.

The book took 38 percent of the votes in a public ballot, beating finalists including "How Tea Cosies Changed the World," ''Was Hitler Ill?" and "God's Doodle: The Life and Times of the Penis."

"Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop" is subtitled "and other practical advice in our campaign against the fairy kingdom." It is described by its Massachusetts-based publisher, Conari Press, as "the essential primer for banishing the dark fairy creatures that are lurking in the dark corners and crevices of your life."

Diagram Prize overseer Horace Bent said it was no coincidence "in these austere times that a book aimed to assist members of the public frugally farming their own produce proved the most popular title."

The book's editor, Clint Marsh, said he and the author were honored to receive a prize that "celebrates the playfulness that is at the heart of much of the world's best book publishing."

"Reginald and I take this as a clear sign that people have had enough of goblins in their chicken coops," he said. "Our campaign against the fairy kingdom continues."

The prize was founded in 1978. Its rules say the books must be serious and their titles not merely a gimmick.

Previous winners of the quirky prize include "Bombproof Your Horse," ''Living With Crazy Buttocks" and "Managing a Dental Practice: The Genghis Khan Way."

Headshot 250Today I have the great pleasure of being the host on Day 11 of the Virtual Blog Tour of author Jamie Smart whose book Clarity: Clear Mind, Better Performance, Bigger Results is celebrating its big Amazon launch March 12th through March 31st, 2013 at http://ClarityBook.biz.

Jamie Smart is an internationally renowned writer, speaker, coach, trainer and consultant. Originally from Canada and now based in London, Jamie shows individuals and organizations the unexpected keys to clarity?the ultimate leverage point for creating more time, better decisions and meaningful results. Jamie is a gifted speaker, equally engaging in front of large audiences and more intimate groups. He?s passionate about helping individuals and businesses to deepen their understanding of Innate Thinking? and to create the results that matter to them. In addition to working with a handful of coaching clients and leading selected corporate programmes, Jamie runs professional development workshops for business leaders, trainers, coaches and consultants. He has appeared on Sky TV and on the BBC, as well as in numerous publications.

Yesterday, Jamie visited Renee Baribeau at http://practicalshamantravel.com/jamie-smart-blog-tour , where they talked about some tips for growing a small business.

Today, I?d like to share with you a recent podcast interview I had with Jamie when I got to ask him some questions on the subject of the mind.

??-

Irene Conlan: What is the ?industrial-age misunderstanding of how the mind works? and what is the way the mind works?

?Jamie Smart: The ?industrial age misunderstanding? is what I refer to as the ?outside-in illusion?; the mistaken belief that we our feelings can come from something other than thinking, moment to moment. In fact, we?re always feeling our thinking, but it often appears that we?re feeling something other than thought. It often looks as though we are feeling our circumstances (bills, jobs, bosses, houses, holidays), our past (childhood, past relationships, what they said to me last week) or our future (what would happen if etc). But we?re always and only feeling our thinking in the moment. This is the way the mind works, and the way our experience of life works.

The outside-in illusion is the cause of many of the more serious problems we face as individuals, organisations and societies. But as we start to ?see through? the misunderstanding, and the superstitious thinking that arises from it, we find find that we have the clarity, wisdom and creativity to solve our problems and create new possibilities.

?Irene Conlan: You state that clarity is our mind?s natural state. What are the influences that move us from clear thinking to what you term ?congested thinking??

?Jamie Smart: Clarity is the mind?s natural state. The only thing that ever stands in the way of that clarity is superstitious thinking arising from the outside-in misunderstanding. The moment a person believes they?re feeling something other than their thinking; they experience themselves (on some level) as isolated and out of connection with life. The moment a person believes they?re at the mercy of a world ?out there? with power over how they feel, it becomes urgent and important to control, manage and manipulate that world to try and ensure they experience more of the feelings they want (and less of the ones they don?t). This fills our minds up with a mental to-do list, and takes us out of the moment. This is the cause of ?congested thinking?.

?Irene Conlan: What is innate thinking and how do you develop it?

?Jamie Smart: Innate thinking is something you?re born with; it?s our natural ability to have an experience of life ? to perceive, think and feel. The principles behind innate thinking are the source of all our experience of life. When our minds are clear, innate thinking brings us what we need for the job at hand. This is why top-performers often claim they have ?nothing on their minds? when they?re ?in flow? or ?in the zone?. As you deepen your understanding of innate thinking, habitual patterns of superstitious thinking will start to fall away, and you?ll find yourself experiencing greater clarity of mind, more of the time.

?Irene Conlan: You talk about letting the mind settle. Is there a way, other than meditation, that helps your mind settle?

?Jamie Smart: Great question. As you continue deepening your understanding of innate thinking, here?s what you?ll find happening? You?ll be ?in the grip? of some superstitious thinking (Eg. Upset about something someone said to you last week) when all of a sudden, it?ll occur to you that you?re feeling your thinking in the moment, NOT what the person said to you. The moment this occurs to you, it?s a sign that your mind?s ?self-correcting system? is returning you to clarity. You don?t have to do anything to make this happen. Just allow the self-correcting system to do what it does best, and you?ll find your mind settling, naturally and automatically.

Italian president seeks way out of political stalemate

By James Mackenzie

ROME (Reuters) - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano began consultations with political leaders on Wednesday to try to find a way of forming a government after the deadlocked election last month which left no party with a majority in parliament.

Senate speaker Pietro Grasso said after meeting Napolitano the president was determined to reach an accord, saying there was "an absolute necessity to give the country a government".

Napolitano would take "all roads possible", he said.

Italy's political stalemate and the prospect of months of uncertainty has created alarm across Europe just as the standoff over bank deposits in Cyprus reawakened fears that the euro zone debt crisis could flare up again.

Center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani, who won a majority in the lower house but not in the Senate, commands the largest bloc in parliament but cannot govern unless he has support from one of the other parties.

However, there has been no sign that an accord is possible with either former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's center-right alliance, the second biggest force in parliament, or the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement led by ex-comic Beppe Grillo, which holds the balance of power.

If no agreement can be struck between parties that are bitterly divided, Italy faces the prospect of a brief period under a caretaker government followed by a return to the polls, possibly as early as June.

Napolitano also meets minor parties, including Prime Minister Mario Monti's centrist group on Wednesday before the main meetings on Thursday when he sees representatives from the 5-Star Movement, Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party and Bersani's Democratic Party (PD).

Bersani, 61, received a small boost at the weekend when his candidates were elected the speakers of the two houses of parliament, despite the center left's lack of a majority in the upper house.

Both speakers announced late on Tuesday that they would take a 30 percent wage cut and urged other parliamentarians to do the same, a move that followed an example set by 5-Star members elected as local officials in Sicily last year who gave up most of their salaries and used the savings to fund small businesses.

LIMITED

Bersani is proposing to present a limited package of reforms aimed at fighting corruption and creating jobs that he hopes can be backed by the 5-Star Movement.

Given the fractious climate, the prospects of a minority government surviving more than a short time are slim but Bersani has little alternative.

"The PD is not changing our line, we'll go to the consultations with the proposals which were voted by the party leadership immediately after the election," he told reporters on Tuesday.

Italy, the euro zone's third-largest economy, can ill afford a prolonged political crisis after the turmoil which brought down Berlusconi's last government and dragged the single currency to the brink of disaster just 16 months ago.

Its economy is deep in recession, and unemployment is at record levels especially among the young. Its 2 trillion-euro ($2.6 trillion) public debt is dangerously vulnerable to bond market volatility and any sharp rise in interest rates.

However, far from prompting the parties to cooperate as they did when Monti's technocrat government took over from Berlusconi in 2011, the crisis appears to have deepened hostility.

Grillo, who has pledged not to give a vote of confidence to a government led by any other party, warned followers against falling into a "trap" after a handful of rebels voted with the center left in the election of the Senate speaker on Saturday.

Berlusconi, fighting a tax fraud conviction and facing trial for paying for sex with a minor, has demanded that the center right be allowed to name the next president when Napolitano's term ends on May 15, offering his support to a Bersani-led government in exchange.

That offer was rejected as "indecent" by the PD, prompting Berlusconi to pledge street protests if parliament appointed a center-left head of state.

A rally organized by the PDL, called "All for Silvio!" is already planned for Saturday to protest against what his supporters say is a political campaign by magistrates against the 76-year-old billionaire.

Mark Brennan Rosenberg: Nine Reasons We Love Criminal Minds

Don't front. You know you love Criminal Minds. What started as kind of a rip-off of CSI has turned into one of the most highly rated television shows on CBS...that no one actually admits to watching but me. However, I know you fellow fans are out there because roughly 13 million people watch the show every week.

True, the show is kind of hard to follow at times and it literally took me four years to figure out what an "unsub" was, I love their continued quest to track down every serial killer, rapist and kidnapper that happens to terrorize a different city in American at the same time every Wednesday. So let's cut the crap and all start admitting that we love it. Here are nine reasons to love those crazy kids from the Behavioral Crime Unit.

1. It's Always Warm.
Feeling chilly? Then tune into Criminal Minds! Because no matter where the BAU is called to it's always warm and none of them will be wearing coats... ever. They could be called to Boise, Idaho in the middle of November and the entire cast will be rocking short sleeves or button ups.

2. Mandy Patinkin Hates Violence.
After the season two finale, Mandy Patinkin left the cast of Criminal Minds because he considered the series to be too violent. He can now be seen in the epically popular series Homeland... Which isn't violent at all... Hmmm...

3. You can play Six Degrees of Separation with Amber Tamblyn.
Joe Mantegna was featured on the hit series Joan of Arcadia with Tamblyn.

Shemar Moore announced Susan Lucci winning the Daytime Emmy in 1999. Lucci starred on All My Children with Sarah Michelle Gellar who appeared in The Grudge 2 with Tamblyn. Both Mandy Patinkin and Thomas Gibson appeared on Chicago Hope, which also starred Carla Gugino who was in Snake Eyes with Nicolas Cage who is featured in the upcoming movie The Croods with Ryan Reynolds who is married to Blake Lively who was in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with Ambery Tamblyn.

Matthew Gray Gubler was in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou with Owen Wilson who was in Wedding Crashers with Kathryn Joosten who was on Joan of Arcadia with Amber Tamblyn.

A.J. Cook was in The Virgin Suicides with Josh Hartnett who was in The Faculty with Selma Hayek who was on Ugly Betty with America Ferrera who co-starred in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with Amber Tamblyn.

It's a fun game. Try playing it next time you watch Criminal Minds.

4. Doppelgangers abound.
Did you know they had the nerve to not renew the fabulous A.J. Cook's contract at one point? Meanwhile, how hot is she? And that's coming from a gay man. They replaced her with Rachel Nichols, who was not only a dead ringer for Cook (and if you weren't paying close attention, you'd think was Cook anyway), but was also kicked out of bed by Samantha on Sex and the City after her ill-fated attempt at having a threesome. Rachel Nichols was, coincidentally enough, in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 with, you guessed it, Amber Tamblyn. See what a fun game that is.

5. The current members of the BAU have collectively helped in catching every serial killer in the past three decades.
No matter where they are or how long ago it was, either Aaron Hotchner or David Rossi have tracked a well known serial killer, either together or separately. It's not uncommon to hear references to criminals of the past, whom they helped catch in various states across this great land of ours. Meanwhile, neither actor is above throwing on a bad wig for a "flashback segment" either.

6. Turns out, Dawson Leery and Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle are both creepy as hell.
Both James Van Der Beek and Frankie Muniz have guest-starred on Criminal Minds as serial killers, who are guaranteed to not only scare the crap out of you, but force you to all but forget their wholesome '90s images.

7. Shemar Moore is the sexiest black man alive.
He turned heads on The Young and the Restless, but for some reason on Criminal Minds Moore solidifies his position as the sexiest black man alive. It must have something to do with the fact that he is either always chasing after a bad guy or kicking the crap out of a serial killer. Either way, he's sure to get your blood boiling.

8. Everyone Loves a Jeanne Tripplehorn Appearance.
You know you do! We forgive you for Waterworld, Jeanne, and fully embrace your post-Big Love appearances on Criminal Minds.

9. It's chock full of Broadway vets cameos.
If you're a fan of the theater, there are a ton of Broadway vets who pop up occasionally on Criminal Minds including, Tony nominee Jayne Atkinson who appears regularly as Erin Strauss, Tony Award winner Keith Carradine made several appearances as psychopathic killer Frank Breitkopf and Dan Lauria who had a critically acclaimed turn on the Great White Way in Lombardi appeared as General Lee Whitworth in the series' fourth season just to name a few.

Criminal Minds is amazing, but don't take my word for it -- see for yourself. New episodes of Criminal Minds air every Wednesday at 9pm EST/ 8pm EST on CBS.
