New federal health insurance law discussed Tuesday

Attorney and business executive Paula Flowers will discuss the effects of the new federal health care law during a Tuesday meeting in Oak Ridge.

Flowers will also discuss the?U.S. Department of Energy?s recent announcement of an award to support a new project to design, license, and help commercialize small nuclear reactors in the United States. The award was given to Babcock & Wilcox in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Bechtel.

Flowers? presentation, titled??Implications of the New Health Insurance Law for Tennessee,??starts at noon Tuesday?in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. It?s part of the biweekly Lunch with the League, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge.

Flowers is president of Enovation Group LLC and an attorney with more than 14 years in practice focusing on regulatory and government law and litigation, municipal law, and business and corporate law, a press release said.

She previously served as senior risk adviser to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and as an environmental compliance engineer for Lockheed Martin Energy Systems at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

Flowers is also a former Tennessee?Commerce and Insurance?commissioner. Appointed by Gov. Phil Bredesen, she served as Tennessee?s insurance and securities regulatory official and served as Tennessee?s state fire marshal, the press release said. She also served on the Tennessee Workers? Compensation Advisory Council, the Tennessee State Insurance Plan Committee, and the Tennessee Health Services Development Agency.

Flowers has bachelor?s and master?s degrees in civil engineering from Tennessee Technological University and McNeese State University, and a law degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Tennessee.

Lunch with the League is open to the public. There is no cost to attend, and reservations are not needed. Box lunches will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis for $7, or you may bring your own. Coffee and tea are provided.
