MORRISON, Colo.?In front of one of the biggest crowds of his campaign, Mitt Romney, joined by Paul Ryan, appeared at the outdoor Red Rocks Amphitheater and told a crowd of 12,000 that Colorado voters will put the GOP ticket over the top?on Nov. 6th.

?We?re on the home stretch now and I think the people of Colorado are going to get us all the way there. What do you think?,? Romney said, to roars from the crowd Tuesday. ?What you?re seeing across this country as we?ve had these debates and as Paul and I have gone across the nation, you?re seeing this movement growing.?

The GOP ticket appeared at the outdoor rally outside of Denver, where their signature ?R? logo reflected in the light on the enormous vertical rocks that surround the stunning venue. The crowd of thousands was packed into the stands, forming the emblem that is emblazoned on the Colorado state flag. ?Audience members were outfitted with noise makers, which they clapped at every pause, as well as chanting ?Romney, Ryan!?

Romney spoke to the supportive crowd?noting signs that read ?Democrats for Romney?? and urged the audience to talk to neighbors who may not be Republicans.

?I came in and some of the folks here were holding signs, ?Democrats for Romney,? all right? I love that. I love that,? Romney said to cheers.

?Paul and I have a few things in common. One is, we both learned how to reach across the aisle in our elected office, to find ways to work with Democrats, Republicans and Independents to get the job done. And we need you to reach across the neighborhood to Democrats and Independents as well, make sure they understand that this is a year to vote for real change if you want to have real recovery.?

Romney again reiterated, ?I need you to get those folks to vote for us!?

Ryan also urged the crowd to stump for them asking to cheers, ?Hey Colorado, are you ready to help us win this thing??

Polls are deadlocked in the state with both tickets within the margin of error. Ryan has spent three days campaigning in the state and ?Romney noted early voting here, which started Monday, asking people to cast their ballots early in order to help out?on Nov. 6th.

?There?s early voting now,? Romney said. ?You can take your ballots and send them in if you?ve got them. If you?ve got your absentee ballots be sure to send them in. If you haven?t got one get into the center and get sure that you get voted early. We want to get that done. We want to bank all those votes so on Election Day you can go out and get people to the polls that otherwise wouldn?t get there. Would you do that for me??

He thanked the audience, saying they are??helping change the course of a nation and setting the course on a path that will lead to greatness and prosperity again and again, that is the grassroots of America. That?s the people of America. That?s who we are tonight.?

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden told reporters earlier Tuesday that the campaign is feeling optimistic about its chances in Colorado.

?I think they?re all very close,? Madden said of the swing states. ?But we feel very, we feel very good about our prospects in Colorado.?

Before Romney and Ryan took the stage, the crowd listened to entertainers and Romney supporters Kid Rock and country star Rodney Atkins, as well as New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez.

Activists: Syrian warplanes strike village, kill 5

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian warplanes have struck a village near a strategic rebel-held town in the country's north, killing five members of an extended family.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says government aircraft hit Mar Shureen village on Wednesday morning.

The Observatory director, Rami Abdul-Rahman, says the dead include a father and his two sons, as well as a two other relatives, a woman and a young man.

Regime forces have intensified airstrikes in an area along a main highway between the northern city Aleppo and Damascus in efforts to reopen a key supply route to Aleppo. The government troops are bogged down in a stalemate with the rebels in Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

Syria's relentless fighting has killed more than 34,000 people since March last year.

Legislative Council member Ray Chan will give establishment support to Hong Kong Pride on 10 November

Hong Kong?s first openly gay lawmaker Ray Chan will lead the city?s Pride parade on 10 November.

?Opposition to the gay community is basically a result of misunderstanding,? said Chan, Hong Kong?s The Standard reports. ?Only through the promotion of a more open-minded education will the basic rights of homosexuals be protected.?

Chan was elected to the legislative council in September. After he was elected he came out publicly saying, ?I believe the election could have lost its focus if I had talked about (my sexuality), but had you asked me about it, I would have told you for sure.?

Three-thousand people are expected at the parade which has be held sporadically since 2008. Popstar Anthony Wong, who came out at a concert earlier this year, will also perform.

The parade?s theme is workplace discrimination and the organizing committee would like ?marchers to dress in outfits representing different careers to promote sexual equality in the workplace,? said chief director of the committee Connie Chan Man-wai.

Last year 2,000 turned out to march down the streets of the city, but there was no parade in 2010.

The parade starts at 3pm from Causeway Bay and will march to Chater Garden on Saturday 10 November. ?

Muhyiddin: Asean, Japan need to shape more suitable relationship

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 ? Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today emphasised the need for Asean nations and Japan to shape their future relationship into one more suited to the realities of the 21st century.

He said that if in the past, Japan was Asean?s principal partner in economic matters, today the regional economic engagement had expanded to include China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.

?This, too, may change as there is a proposal to reformulate this network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) under an arrangement to be known as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

?All these developments will ultimately have an impact on the status quo. As much as we are happy with the current state of affairs between the two sides, it is time for us to look for new ways to strengthen and deepen these relations,? he said in his keynote address at the 38th Asean-Japan Business Meeting, here.

Malaysia-Japan Economic Association (MAJECA) chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim and Japan?s Ambassador to Malaysia Shigeru Nakamura were also present at the event.

Muhyiddin suggested that to strengthen Asean-Japan relations, four areas had to be explored.

Firstly, he said, there was a need to promote Japanese investments in high value-added sectors such as green technologies, environmental technologies, bio-technologies and information communication technologies in the Asean countries.

Secondly, measures needed to be taken to double trade and investment volume and conclude the signing of the Asean-Japan investment and Asean-Japan services agreements, he said.

Thirdly, he said, it was necessary to improve Asean-Japan connectivity. Fourthly, there was a need to create greater awareness of Asean among Japanese small and medium enterprises (SMEs), he said.

On the Asean Economic Community (AEC), Muhyiddin said Asean should not delay implementation of its plan to form an economic community by 2015.

He said the progress of this project was being monitored at the leaders? level.

?In this context, let me reiterate the strong commitment of the Malaysian government to do what is necessary to form the AEC. Our success rate in the implementation of the AEC blueprint measures over 90 per cent,? he said.

Meanwhile, Nakamura read out a congratulatory message from Japan?s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda who said Japan was determined to further deepen ?kizuna? (friendship) and would continue to expand political and security cooperation to maintain regional peace and stability.

Strengthening the region?s economic integration would benefit global economies, Noda said.

?Enhancement of Asean connectivity is an issue that Japan will actively work on together with the private sector.

Nicolas Giuseppone and a team at the Université de Strasbourg and CNRS have created thousands of nano-machines to replicate the movement of human muscle fibers. Weaving them all together, the machines are able to make a coordinated contraction movement that stretches and contracts. For the moment, the supramolecular polymers can only stretch a matter of micrometers, but in the future they could be used to create artificial muscles, small robots or even materials that can move. Hopefully it'll also give us the power to leap tall buildings, so we'll be outside practicing our sound effects.

October 23 preview: Imagining Apple's iPad mini event

Back in May, iMore learned Apple would be going ahead with a 7-inch iPad and targeting an October release. Now Apple has gone and announced an October 23, 2012 event, and while we won't know the exact agenda until Apple executives take the California Theater stage, it's widely expected that the iPad mini will be star of the show. But it won't be the whole show. Whether Apple runs the October iPad/Mac event like the September iPhone/iPod event, as essentially two separate events glued together, or whether they run them as a single event like the WWDC Keynote that flows from one topic to another, rumors persist of a focus on iBooks, of an updated iPad 3, of new Macs, and perhaps of more.

Figuring out which are red herrings and which are real leaks, which are actual products and which are just products of the imagination is an interesting exercise. Apple doesn't pre-announce, but they also don't just throw things at walls to see what will stick. They're secretive but focused, surprising but sane. Based on their past behavior, we can try and predict their future behavior. And based on their past events, we can make some educated guesses about this week's event.

Apple update

As usual, it's likely Apple's CEO Tim Cook will take the stage first, welcome everyone, and the proceed to give a quick overview of how Apple is doing. Apple Retail, iPhone 5 sales, Mac sales, App Store, iTunes Store, iBookstore, and everything else we usually see at the beginning of an Apple event. And again, unlike most other companies, we won't get bullshit percentages of specific markets or inventory stuffed into channels. We'll get numbers, big ones, and lots of them.

iPad mini

There is a segment of the market for which the current 9.7-inch iPad is too expensive, to heavy, or for one or both of those reasons doesn't make it the reading-centric experience they're looking for. An iPad mini -- or iPad air -- that costs less, is substantially lighter, and is launched in conjunction with an expanded and improved iBooks initiative, addresses that market segment.

It could well be the next big (little) thing, and Apple's next hundred million seller. And it could kick Amazon's Kindle teeth in. Here's the deal:

iPad 3 mark II

Back in August iMore reported that Apple was planning to update the iPad 3 to the new Lightning connector as well. In addition, new chipsets also sounded like their were on the agenda, including an iPhone 5-style cellular radio for international LTE. Although not at all a direct parallel, think of it like the Verizon iPhone 4 and its improved antenna -- a mid-cycle update to add additional markets, that just happens to improve a few things along the way.

iBooks

If Apple really intends to use the iPad mini to clear the tablet skies of Amazon and their budget-ilk, than it needs to address books. Apple is so far ahead of any other online content provider in almost every area, it's almost laughable (if those of us outside the U.S. weren't so busy crying...), but books are a different matter. Apple's iBooks have always been technically ahead of Amazon's Kindle books in terms of capabilities, but Amazon is closing that gap. The gap Apple has to close is catalog.

It doesn't matter how good looking your books are if the ones people want to read aren't in your catalog. If Apple can equal Amazon's catalog, only then can their technology really eclipse Amazon's offering.

(And hey, can we get a Mac version already?)

Macs

The Retina Mac revolution began with the 15-inch at WWDC. Where it goes next has been the question ever since. 21- and 27-inch iMacs (and Thunderbolt displays) probably aren't imminent. Making panels that big and that dense sounds cost prohibitive at this point. Driving that panel is also beyond the throughput of current generation ThunderBolt connectors. Too. Many. Pixels.

Likewise, the MacBook Air line lacks the discreet GPU needed to run Retina, and lacks enough space in the unibody for batteries to power it. That leaves the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Apple could add a GPU to the 13-inch, and the panel size is smaller than the 15-inch, so it's both doable and affordable. And it looks like that's exactly what Apple has done -- the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

The Mac mini will likely see updates to the latest Intel chipsets, along with USB 3.

That just leaves the iMac. It won't be Retina, it will also get updates to the latest chips and USB 3. The big question is whether it will get the same, new laminated panel the new MacBook Pros enjoy. That wouldn't make it denser, but it would make it better looking.

iTunes 11

Apple showed off iTunes 11 for the first time at the iPhone 5 event back in September, but won't be releasing it until October. That leaves the potential for additional features to be shown off. And that's a mixed bag. People still use desktops and Apple still needs a single hub it can easily port to Windows, but iTunes is the past.

Regardless of what we get this Tuesday, it might just be the beginning of that end.

iOS 6.x

Time was Apple released new versions of iOS in the summer alongside the new iPhone, and updated them to iOS x.1 alongside thew new iPod touch. But now iPhone's are released in the fall, and this year the iPod touch with it, so could there still be an iOS 6.1 before year's end?

We've heard rumors of additional iOS 6 functionality, things that didn't make it into the first release. AirPlay direct, and other direct device-to-device data transfer features are one. Expanded background downloads and other activity is another.

We've all seen the iPad before. We've all seen iOS 6 before. Apple makes their money on hardware, but their soul is in software. If there's something else to either the device or the event, if there's something else on the roadmap this year, we'll know it when and if Apple SVP of iOS, Scott Forstall, takes the stage.

Taliban ambush kills 10 Afghan troops

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Taliban insurgents killed 10 Afghan troops in an ambush in western Herat province, police and government officials said Tuesday.

A spokesman for the provincial governor, Muhiudin Noori, said the Afghan troops ? which included both soldiers and police ? were searching late Monday for a group of insurgents who had earlier set up a roadblock, stopping and seizing passing vehicles, when they were ambushed.

Five policemen, including the district commander and five soldiers died in the ensuing firefight, Noori said. There were no insurgent casualties, but police later arrested 25 suspects found in the area, he said.

Also Tuesday, an American service member was killed in an insurgent attack in the east, the U.S. military said in a statement. It did not provide further details about the attack. The latest death makes at least 12 American service members killed so far this month and 265 killed so far this year.

The Herat ambush was the bloodiest single incident for Afghan security forces this year in western Afghanistan ? an area where the insurgents have been less active than in their strongholds in the east and west of the country.

In recent months, Taliban guerrillas have been switching tactics and increasingly targeting Afghan security forces as the international coalition continues its drawdown toward a planned withdrawal of the majority of combat troops in 2014.

Meanwhile, President Hamid Karzai condemned "in the strongest possible terms" a NATO raid on Sunday in Logar province in which he said four children were killed.

A presidential statement said coalition troops carried out the operation in Baraki Barak district in an effort to apprehend two armed militants. But this resulted in the deaths of the four children who were tending to their animals in the same area, it said.

Din Mohammad Darwesh, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the victims were between 10 and 13 years old.

NATO on Tuesday acknowledged that its forces "may be responsible for the unintended, but nonetheless tragic, death of three Afghan civilians" during the operation in Baraki Barak district. Coalition commander U.S. Gen. John R. Allen expressed his condolences to the families of those killed.

There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy in the number of victims in the two statements.

In recent months, Karzai has criticized the international military coalition for what he said was the killing of civilians in Afghanistan, for not going after terrorist safe havens in neighboring Pakistan and for not providing the Afghan forces with all the weapons they need.

The criticisms drew an angry response from U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who earlier this month said the Afghan leader should occasionally say "thank you" to allied forces who are fighting and dying in Afghanistan, rather than criticizing them.

Ahead of Monday's presidential debate on foreign policy, a new narrative is emerging about why the White House waited so long to describe the Sept. 11 attack in Libya as a terrorist attack.

That?s a central question bearing on whether President Obama is weak in foreign policy, as GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney charges. A clear picture of the behind-the-scenes action here may not emerge until histories are written years hence. But new reports on the eve of the third and final presidential debate suggest that at least some of the cause of the delay stemmed from the nature of intelligence community reports to the president on the tragedy.

Here?s what we know at the moment: On Sept. 16, US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice appeared on five TV talk shows and generally ascribed the attack to the ad hoc action of mobs infuriated by a crude anti-Islamic video made in the US. She said evidence gathered to that point indicated no premeditation on the part of attackers, but she did add that ?extremists? might have escalated the violence once it began.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Ms. Rice took this line because that?s what the CIA was saying at the time. For more than a week, the daily briefing prepared for the president by the intelligence community held that the assault grew out of a spontaneous demonstration, write Journal reporters Adam Enous and Siobhan Gorham.

?The CIA was consistent from Sept. 13 to Sept. 21 that the attack evolved from a protest,? they write.

CIA analysts began to doubt this conclusion as more evidence about the confusing situation worked its way up through the intelligence chain. Lower level intelligence officials suspected the assertion about protests was outdated even as Rice was making the rounds of her Sunday talk show appearances, according to a story by reporter Eric Schmitt in The New York Times.

Given that the CIA began with only sketchy reports of what had happened in Benghazi, and that US operatives arrived on scene days later to sift evidence, it may be only natural that the agency?s story has shifted, according to intelligence officials quoted in the Times story.

As early as Sept. 20, the agency concluded that there hadn?t been a protest in Benghazi prior to the attack. But the daily brief for the president, the source from which top officials derive their view of what?s going on in the world, didn?t change to reflect this until the morning of Sept. 22.

By Sept. 27, the White House had changed its talking points on this sensitive issue. That day Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta at a Pentagon news conference described the killings as a ?terrorist attack."

Since then, Republicans have been adamant that White House was either confused about the incident or trying to mislead the American people.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina said during an appearance on MSNBC on Oct. 22 that he had been told ?early on, this was a militia."

?You don?t have a riot with heavy weapons that goes on for seven hours in a preplanned fashion,? said Senator Graham.

If the White House truly believes that it was misled by CIA reports, it needs to fire somebody, said Graham. He further indicated that videos of the attack and news reports quickly indicated that it would have been difficult for the killings to have been the work of a mob, and that the White House should have taken these sources of information into account.

Obama officials have countered that they are describing the situation as they know it in a transparent manner to Congress and the public, and that the investigation into the tragedy is still unfolding.

?We?re getting to the bottom of it. And we need to work this investigation through. It?s really important that we not politicize the process,? said Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter on NBC?s ?Today? show Oct. 22.

Pregnant NYC woman stabbed to death ahead of wedding - The ...

A New York City woman that was eight months pregnant and was set to get married Sunday was found dead in her apartment, police and witnesses say.

Vindalee Smith, 38, was due to deliver a baby boy in two weeks and was stabbed to death in the neck, a source told the New York Post.

Authorities found Smith in her East Flatbush apartment around 9:30 a.m. It was unclear how long she was dead before she was found, but her baby did not survive, the Associated Press reports.

Smith has two teenage boys ? who lived with family friends ? and two girls in their twenties.?

A friend told the New York Post that Monique, Smith?s oldest daughter, fell to the ground crying after arriving at the home.

?It was so sad. She came for a baby shower and a wedding ? but now she has to stay for a funeral,? the friend said.

The baby shower was expected to take place Saturday night followed by the wedding on Sunday morning, CBS New York reports.

Police are still searching for a motive and suspects in the case. But a pastor at the New Dimension Church, where Smith was to get married, told the New York Post that she had received death threats in the past from a former neighbor whom she had an ongoing ?misunderstanding? with.

She worked at a home health-care agency for the elderly, the newspaper added.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli soldiers commandeered a vessel carrying pro-Palestinian activists destined for Gaza on Saturday, cutting off communications and steering it from international waters toward the Jewish state.

The ship was the latest in a series of activist-manned vessels challenging Israel's blockade on the territory, imposed when the militant group Hamas seized the coastal strip in 2007. Israeli officials say they need to maintain the blockade, mainly to prevent weapons smuggling.

Six Israeli naval vessels stopped the Estelle as it was about 30 nautical miles from Gaza, with masked soldiers boarding the ship and ordering it to sail to Israel's Ashdod port, said a Victoria Strand, a spokeswoman for the activists.

The Swedish-owned, Finnish-flagged ship left Naples, Italy, on Oct. 7 with about 30 people from eight countries on board, including lawmakers from Norway, Sweden, Greece and Spain, as well as Israeli activists and a 79-year-old former legislator from Canada.

Israel, aided by Egypt, imposed a full border closure of Gaza by air, land and sea after Hamas took over the strip and drove out forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Israel eased its restrictions after its raid of a Turkish-led blockade-busting flotilla in 2010 left nine activists dead and sparked international condemnation.

Still, Israel continues to block sea access to Gaza and severely restricts its ability to export goods and import raw materials.

Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Avital Leibovich accused the activists of staging a provocation and said the naval blockade was necessary to safeguard Israel's security.

"We have this blockade because there are constant smuggling attempts of weapons, munitions that eventually reach the hands of terror organizations inside Gaza," she said.

Strand said the takeover of the Estelle by Israeli forces was a "demonstration of ruthlessness."

The ship carried cement, basketballs and musical instruments. It was emblazoned with "Ship to Gaza" on one side, and also flew the colorful red, green, black and white Palestinian flag.

Activists say the blockade amounts to collective punishment of Gaza's 1.6 million residents, denying them the chance to trade and travel freely. Neighboring Egypt continues to impose restrictions at its passenger crossing with Gaza. The blockade has deepened the hardships of Gaza's most vulnerable in the impoverished territory, where between 70 percent to 80 percent of all residents rely on U.N. donated food aid to get by.

"It's hard to imagine what threat one sailboat, loaded with humanitarian supplies and a small number of people, could do to" Israel's mighty military, said Eva Manly, the wife of former Canadian parliamentarian James Manly. She said she lost contact with her 79-year-old husband early Saturday.

Israeli Defense Ministry spokesman Joshua Hantman said the goods onboard would be checked before entering Gaza through an Israeli-controlled land crossing. Hantman said militants have attempted in the past to smuggle weapons by sea. The latest attempt was in 2011, when a vessel carrying 50 tons of weaponry sought to reach Gaza, he added.
